A week later, Maurecia was eating lunch alone. She was eating a piece of sweet potato pie. Joy was crawling around in the dirt looking for more bags of money.
— Narration in "Lost and Found"

Maurecia is a character in the Wayside School books. She is one of the many students in Mrs. Jewls's class. She is a sweet and honest student with a strong love for ice cream. She is one of the Unbreakables, alongside Joy, Ron, and Deedee.

Appearance[]

Aside from being pretty[1] and once wearing a polka-dot shirt, never is Maurecia's appearance described. In "A Story That Isn't About Socks," Maurecia's "best clothes" are a black and white striped bikini. In "Voices," her voice is described as like "a pineapple milkshake".

Personality[]

In the books, Maurecia is a sweet and honest girl with an immense love for ice cream. Though, occasionally Maurecia's love for ice cream leads to her having few friends, as described in her chapter, saying that "Everybody liked Maurecia—except Kathy, but then she didn’t like anybody. Maurecia only liked ice cream." Though, by the end up the chapter, through trying ice cream made to taste like what other students taste when they taste nothing at all, she befriends most of the other students in the class, liking Todd's flavor the most.

She is seen to be very considerate of others, as seen in "Lost and Found", where she finds a bag containing a lot of money, but rather than keeping it all to herself, puts it in the lost and found, where Mr. Finch then takes it to start his own ice cream business. However, her generosity does come with reward, since afterward, she obtains five-hundred dollars and and endless supply of ice cream from his store (Joy, who helped by stealing Maurecia's lunch, recieved a pencil, which Mr. Finch hates). At the beginning of "The Ultimate Test, Day One," she additionally wishes her friends good luck before the Ultimate Test, while taking note of all their skills. Even after surpassing them all in "The Ultimate, Ultimate Test," she doesn't let her success get to her, and she still regards the other Unbreakables as "the greatest friends ever!"

As is seen during the Ultimate Test, Maurecia is surprisingly talented, winning the first prize in the Spelling Bee, Jump Rope Arithmetic, and the Stairway Quiz. Compared to her friends, Maurecia appears to show a little more patience, as she jumps with one rope instead of two in "Jump Rope Arithmetic," and during "The Ultimate, Ultimate Test," she seems to spend a little longer thinking about her answers than Deedee, who fumbles over various questions when trying to get to the top.

Maurecia's best friend is Joy, who seems to have some influence on her, as she occasionally acts a little rude towards a few of her classmates, despite her usually sweet and honest demeanor. As seen in "Joe", she refers to Joe as being stupid upon hearing he can't count, and in "Time Out", she says that Todd is more stupid than he is ugly. That being said, she has been seen holding positive opinions towards these characters in other chapters, and as is seen in "The Unbreakables," she periodically teases her close friends, as she does with Deedee.

Relationships[]

Joy[]

Lost and Found Heitz

Maurecia and Joy find a bag of money. ("Lost and Found," 2019)

Joy is Maurecia's best friend in the books, and the two are first seen interacting in "Joe," where the two make fun of Joe together, though the two may not have actually been friends until "Maurecia," as prior to this, Maurecia only likes ice cream. Their first significant interaction is in "Recess," where it's established Joy does whatever Maurecia does during recess, and they later are seen teasing Dameon together in "Love and a Dead Rat." "Lost and Found" officially confirms they are best friends, though even at this point, Joy steals her lunch and only admits it when she thinks she could get money out of it. In "Mr. Poop," the two jump rope together, and in "Time Out," the two make fun of Todd on the stairs together. In "Guilty," she considers Joy one of her friends.

In "The Unbreakables," it is revealed she is part of a four-way friend group with Joy, alongside Ron and Deedee, and they are described as being "more than best friends forever." Despite being so close, however, Joy does still seem to view herself above Maurecia, as she suspects that Maurecia will fail the Ultimate Test in "The Ultimate Test, Day One," and suspects her to trip over when she starts getting a solid record in "Jump Rope Arithmetic." Joy is shown to harbor jealousy towards Maurecia, as she quits watching her performance long before she finishes. In "The Ultimate, Ultimate Test," Joy still seems bitter about having her record beaten by Maurecia, but Maurecia still refers to her as one of her greatest friends ever, and the two seem to reconcile, performing their special handshake together with the other Unbreakables.

Deedee[]

As of "The Unbreakables," Maurecia considers Deedee one of her closest friends, as part of a four-way friend group alongside Joy and Ron. Before the Ultimate Test starts, Maurecia takes note of one of Deedee's legs being shorter than the other, something she knows will give her an advantage during the Stairway Quiz, and she is seen referring to Deedee as one of the greatest friends ever at the end of "The Ultimate, Ultimate Test." While the two are not seen interacting much prior to "The Unbreakables," Maurecia does consider Deedee to be one of her friends in "Guilty."

Despite this, however, Maurecia and Deedee have had bumps in their relationship in the past. In "The Unbreakables," she joins Joy and Ron in teasing Deedee, though she generally seems less harsh than the other two, simply questioning why she eats the heel first when eating spaghetti and feetballs and joining Ron in laughing at one of Joy's comments. At the end of the chapter, however, she ends up joining Ron and Joy to help find Deedee's missing history homework. Additionally, during "The Ultimate, Ultimate Test," Deedee seems to be upset at Maurecia surpassing her during the Stairway Quiz, but the two reconcile by the end of the chapter, with Deedee considering her a great friend, and Maurecia returning the favor.

Ron[]

As of "The Unbreakables," Maurecia considers Ron one of her closest friends, as part of a four-way group alongside Joy and Deedee. Maurecia first considers Ron a friend after enjoying his flavor of ice cream in "Maurecia," and while the two are rarely seen interacting between then and "The Unbreakables," it can be assumed that they became closer friends at some point. In "The Unbreakables," she eats lunch with him, Joy, and Deedee, and laughs alongside him at one of Joy's comments. The two team up alongside Joy to help Deedee find her homework at the end of the chapter. Their relationship, however, has had some strain at times, as in "The Ultimate Test, Day One," Ron seems to feel upset about Maurecia beating him in the Spelling Bee, though it is also due to being tripped up over a difficult to spell made-up word. By "The Ultimate, Ultimate Test," however, the two reconcile, as Ron refers to Maurecia as a great friend, and she returns the sentiments.

Todd[]

Maurecia seems to have a mixed relationship with Todd, as in "Maurecia," it is revealed that Todd-flavored ice cream was her absolute favorite, and that occasionally she'd bite his arm just to get the flavor. However, despite this, she seems to occasionally joke about him with Joy, laughing with her when she states Todd's "never alright" in "A Bad Word," and stating that he is uglier than stupid when talking about him on the stairs in "Time Out." That being said, in "Guilty," she considers Todd to be one of her friends.

Joe[]

Maurecia's history with Joe started out rocky, as seen in "Joe," where she talks about him being "stupid" when he reveals he doesn't know how to count. Afterwards, the two threaten to beat each other up. However, by "Maurecia," the two are friends, as Joe's ice cream flavor is one of the first she enjoys.

Terrence[]

In "Nancy," she opts to trade names with Terrence, showing that she, at the very least, likes his name. In addition, she considers Terrence a friend in "Guilty," which means that she is one of, if not the only character with a positive opinion of Terrence. Otherwise, the two haven't been seen interacting.
